Continuous Sidewalks and Bike Paths: An Emerging Practice

Originally presented November 8, 2023

Continuous sidewalks and bike paths are a simple design feature that reflects the modal hierarchy that many cities have adopted. They are best known from their use in the Netherlands – and while only a few Canadian communities have implemented them, many more are interested.

This webinar will offer attendees an overview of TAC’s new Emerging Practice Briefing: Continuous Sidewalks and Bike Paths , and will share some examples of continuous sidewalks and bike paths from both the Netherlands and Canada.

Presenter

Roy Symons, P.Eng. – ISL Engineering and Land Services Ltd.

Roy is a sustainable transportation specialist whose work focuses primarily on active transportation planning and design. His work to introduce continuous sidewalks in Nanaimo earned several awards for the City and ISL, including a TAC Technical Achievement Award. This positive response has spurred him to pursue greater industry acceptance and use of continuous sidewalks and bike paths, beginning with TAC’s emerging practice briefing.
