Traffic Calming – What’s New? What Works?

This webinar will highlight the lessons learned from innovative traffic calming approaches in three Canadian cities.

Edmonton’s raised crossings and continuous sidewalks 
This presentation will explain how Edmonton’s new design standard for raised crosswalks, raised intersections and continuous sidewalks addresses challenges including 30 to 40 km/h speeds, the impact of vertical deflections on transit, detailed grading, and accessibility.

Ottawa’s temporary traffic calming program 
This presentation will discuss Ottawa’s efforts to reduce speeding on residential streets through low-cost countermeasures such as speed radar boards, flex-stakes, median islands, signs, pavement markings, and speed humps and tables. 

Toronto’s left-turn calming measures 
This presentation will describe the objectives of Toronto's left-turn calming pilot project and review the findings of a before-and-after study, operational and maintenance challenges, and recommendations for future implementation.

Robert is a Traffic Specialist for the City of Ottawa and has been involved in the City’s Temporary Traffic Calming Program since 2015.

Jafar is a Transportation Engineer with the City of Toronto's Vision Zero Projects unit.
