Improving Island Platform Transit Stops for People with Vision Loss

WSP was retained by the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) to conduct a national study to review the challenges and develop solutions to “island platform bus stops” where passengers must cross a cycle track to access the bus platform. The project was guided by an Advisory Committee comprised of municipal staff from across Canada.

This presentation will give attendees information about the project, including the literature review and field research conducted at sites across Canada involving participants with sight loss. It will also examine the recommendations delivered in the final report on improving comfort and safety for people with vision loss using island platform bus stops.

About the presenter:

Yousteena Bocktor is a Transportation Planner with WSP, based in Thornhill, Ontario. She specializes in accessible active transportation design, complete streets, road safety, and multi-modal transportation studies. She served as the research lead for WSP for the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) Floating Island Bus Stop project.
