Leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) to Drive a Decision Support System

Learn more about how an awarded USDOT grant evolved into a groundbreaking opportunity to revolutionize integrated corridor management (ICM) decision support systems (DSS) through artificial intelligence (AI). Matt Davis will share how an AI-based decision support system (AI-DSS) was developed and deployed in Tennessee to facilitate ICM operations along the I-24 SMART Corridor, which includes variable speed limits, lane control signs, interconnected traffic signals, and more. The project delivery process and performance measures will be presented.

About the presenter:

Matt Davis , PE, PTOE, ITS Practice Lead and Traffic Engineer, Stantec, collaborates with teams across North America to plan for and implement innovative and transformational Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) solutions that leverage technology to improve the safety and operations of transportation networks. He has led the delivery of ITS projects across the country, overcoming challenges through unique and targeted solutions.

Bridging Communities for Sustainable Development: How AtkinsRéalis has modified Indigenous consultation approaches for the Webequie Supply Road and Northern Road Link projects

Join Don Parkinson and Jennifer Ashawasegai-Pereira of AtkinsRealis Canada Inc. and Indigenous E3, and Tony McGuire of Theymedia Inc., in an interesting discussion on the innovative consultation methods being used on two Indigenous-led major all-season road project environmental assessment and preliminary engineering projects in northern Ontario, the Webequie Supply Road and the Northern Road Link.

Our guests will share their thoughts on the evolution of the change in consultation approach, including what triggered the need to pivot to different, non-traditional methods, the options considered, the technology challenges faced in production, as well as the promotion of the consultation events using social media to ensure grass-roots participation. A discussion of what worked and what didn’t work will be provided, including comments from Indigenous community members as to the effectiveness of these new approaches.

About the presenters:

Don Parkinson is a Senior Consultation Specialist with AtkinsRealis and co-founder of Indigenous E3 (IE3), a majority-owned Indigenous partnership between AtkinsRealis Canada Inc. and Indigenous and Community Engagement, a 100% Indigenous-owned consultancy.  In his 30+ year career, he has worked around the world as a Consultation and GIS Specialist.

Jennifer Ashawasegai-Pereira is Anishinabe Kwe from Henvey Inlet First Nation in Robinson Huron Treaty. She is an Indigenous Engagement and Knowledge Specialist with AtkinsRealis, and also a member of the IE3 team. Jennifer has a background in journalism, communications, justice, and community engagement.

Tony McGuire is an expert in multiple fields, having 15 years of experience ranging from IT to film production.  The documentary he has just completed, entitled Bridges to the North, has won multiple awards in North America and is being released publicly in April 2024. He comes from the 1850 treaty lands of his ancestors and is a proud Anishinawbe.

Harnessing AI and a Drone-equipped Sounding Hammer to Revolutionize Bridge Condition Surveys

The Arcadis and Niricson partnership is reshaping the landscape of bridge asset data collection and utilization. Leveraging an inventive acoustic data collection device mounted on a drone to map delamination, in conjunction with an AI-backed algorithm, the new condition survey methodology provides a new capability for quantifying and monitoring defects through time, model deterioration, as well as access to hard-to-reach locations.

This innovative approach not only reduces health and safety risks by minimizing the need for specialist access and traffic management but also enhances the understanding of bridge conditions and enables the tracking of deterioration rates. Consequently, the digital condition survey, complete with 3D modelling, can be seamlessly delivered to asset owners in a significantly shorter timeframe and with sub-millimetre resolution. This achievement is realized without causing any disruption to traffic, marking a new era in efficient and precise bridge asset management.

About the presenters:

Joshua Fowler, Chief Sales Officer, Niricson. Leveraging a background in economics and expertise working with the US Department of Transportation, Josh supports provincial and federal governments and utilities in evaluating the resilience of critical concrete infrastructure, including dams, bridges and airfields, on a mission to help them optimize maintenance and capital spending.

Rod Schebesch, Business Unit Director, Mobility. With over 30 years of consulting experience across Canada, Rod has managed design and engineering projects including rural roads, municipal arterials, freeways, and LRT extensions. He has also built teams and managed large groups delivering transportation engineering services applying innovative approaches.
